The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect

bosnia-and-herzegovina stamp

It was a glorious moment, standing up there in my bathing suit with hundreds of cameras snapping below. I was about to partake in a 449-year tradition, a timeless test of bravery for young men which, also happens to be a great way to impress girls, earn a few cigarettes or, nowadays, collect Euros from awestruck tourists. The feat consisted in jumping off the narrow ledge of the historic Stari Most, falling a frightening 21 meters before crashing into the freezing river at 70 km/hr. Had I only foreseen the series of unfortunate consequences that I was about to unleash…

Hello Yannick…I sincerely hope that you are okay.I also hope that the only negative consequences you write of, are, that you didn’t earn any cigarettes!

Come-on Yannick, don’t leave us hanging (no pun intended). What happened? What consequences? Please, we wanna know:)

Wendy, I wish!! Unfortunately not… I am afraid the consequences were way more severe. And OK, OK Daniel, here you go: So the impact caused a 20-year-old knee injury to resurface, sending me to the hospital, having to be immobilized for 3 days, cancelling my bicycle expedition (and my girlfriend’s!) on the 2nd day of the trip, having to change plane tickets and rent a car to get around (which almost landed me in a Montenegrin Jail… next postcard), having to deal with a complication that prevented me from sleeping normally for 2 weeks (due the medication they had prescribed), still not being able to do my daily jog while I wait for an MRI scan which will most likely lead to a knee operation on my meninscus. Should I go on?

Don’t tell me. You’ve turned into a giant butterfly!

I am very sorry to hear about your injuries Yannick and hope they will not be too serious and prevent future adventures. The travel modifications must have been disappointing for you both. Before reading about the consequences, I felt certain that you had left us hanging, as you so often do, only to find out the ending in the book that will one day bear your name.

Wow, indeed those are serious consequences and I hope you recover completely. However, considering all the crazy stuff you do, you are one lucky globetrotter. Take care and get well soon:)

The older you get, the less invincible! Take care of your fragile frame.
