First Contact

First Contact

I had been watching the surface attentively. Aside from the 10-foot crocs lurking underneath my dingy inflatable canoe, this was a real hippo minefield. I had just passed two families, and another one had submerged ahead. A wrong move is not an option when tiptoeing around the animal that kills the most people in Africa. Suddenly, I looked up and there he was, intrigued. Using branches stretching out over the river, the chimp approached cautiously, as one would when making first contact with a new civilization. A familiar feeling rushed through my entire body, like a junkie getting his fix.
